VOA美国之音英语教学节目一网
流行美语(Popular American):流行美语短小精悍，生动活泼，幽默轻松。每次五分钟。节目通过两个大学生的对话来教授美国年轻人常用的俚语，有的在字典上还查不到。

美语咖啡屋(American Cafe):美语咖啡屋接替原来在这段时间播出的美语信箱节目。美语咖啡屋这个节目生动活泼，以对话形式介绍美国各方面的文化和风俗，并给听众们提供很多机会听到真正美国人的讲话。

习惯用语(Words & Idioms):美国习惯用语专门介绍美国人常用的习惯用语，它们的出典并以富有生活情趣的实例来说明用法。每次节目十分钟，每周播出一个新的节目。

「美国习惯用语」第一讲
give me a hand
foot the bill
blow out
lock, stock and barrel
hook, line and sinker
每一种语言都有它独特的成语和俗语。而学习外语的人经常在理解这些习惯用语时会感到很困难。这是因为你不可能从组成某个习惯用语的字面上来懂得它的意思。
比如,美国人经常说:“Give me a hand.” 按照字面来理解, “give me hand”就是“给我一只手。”可是,它的意思却是“帮我一下忙。”
另外一个例子是: “Foot the bill.”
“Foot”的意思是 “一只脚”,而“bill”在这儿的解释是“账单”。“Foot the bill.”并不是把帐单踩在脚底下,而是付账的意思。
另外,有的时候,一个词汇有好几种解释。就拿下面一句话来作例子吧:
例句-1:“We arrived two hours late at the big blow-out for Charlie’s birthday because our car had a blow-out.”
这句话里第一个blow-out是指规模很大的聚会,第二个blow-out是指汽车的轮胎炸了。整个句子的意思是:“由于我们车胎炸了,所以我们晚了两个小时才到达查理举行生日宴会的地方。”
还有一些习惯用语从字典上的意思来看是相同的,但是它们使用的场合却不同。
下面两个习惯用语就是很好的例子。
一个是“Lock, stock and barrel”,另外一个是:“Hook, line and sinker”。
Lock, stock and barrel和Hook, line and sinker都是全部的意思,可是用法却不同。
我们先来举一个Lock, stock and barrel的例子:
例句-2:“Mr. Rockefeller bought the whole oil company lock, stock and barrel.”
这句话的意思是:“洛克菲勒先生把整个石油公司买了下来”。换句话说,也就是他买了这个石油公司的大楼丶油井和其他属于这个公司的资产。
Hook, line and sinker虽然也和lock, stock and barrel一样是全部的意思,可是它还带有受骗的意思。例如:
例句-3:“I warned Sally not to believe that man's stories about how rich he was, but she swallowed them hook, line and sinker. After she married him, she found out that he owed everyone in his office money.”
他说:“我告诉沙利不要相信那个男人说的他多么有钱之类的话。可是沙利却一点都没有怀疑他。等到结婚才发现这个人几乎向每个同事都借了钱。”

美国之音voa流行美语
Lesson One 第一课

今天我们开始播送[流行美语]。在这个节目里，我们要请大家听Michael 和李华的对话，他们俩都是纽约大学的学生。 Michael 是美国人，但是他听得懂中文。他和李华在这个新学期里不约而同地都选了摄影课。现在是清早7:50，俩人在课堂门口碰到了。请注意他们讲话中用的两个常用语： bummed 和 chill。
M: Hey, Li Hua, what are you doing here? You taking this class too?
L: 对，我选了摄影课。可是这节课那么早，我最讨厌起大早。
M: Yeah, I'm really bummed that I have to get up so early! I'm also bummed out that Dr. Johnson is teaching this class. I've heard she's really tough.
L: 嗨，Michael, 什么是 bummed? 我记得Bum 不是指无家可归的人吗？
M: Yeah, that is true. But here I used bummed and bummed out. They both mean to be unhappy or upset.

M: I'm really bummed that I have to get up so early! I'm also bummed out that Professor Johnson is teaching this class.

M: Sure, but we usually only say that if the bar is quiet and not too crowded.

M: Sounds great! Ah, look at the time. I need to go meet my friend at the bookstore. Sorry that I have to go, I'm really bummed to have to leave you!

Lesson one
Jason, A Cafe Visit
J: Hello, I'm Jody! Welcome to American Cafe!
Y: 大家好！我是杨晨，欢迎到美语咖啡屋！我们今天要来到了街对面的那架咖啡馆。我们今天要采访Jason他是这架咖啡馆的一个雇员。我们先谈谈咖啡文化对美国人来说意味是什么。
J: Now we're here with Jason who works at a cafe. And we're to talk to him about what he sees in the Cafe culture in American.
实录1: Jason: My name is Jason and we are in Rockville, Maryland, which is a suburb of Washington, D.C. - the nation's capital actually.
Jody: So, Jason, what do you see people doing when they come into this cafe?
实录2: Jason: There are all sorts of things. We have people that just come in get a cup of coffee and go. We have people that, that linger and talk. Some that read and do crossword puzzles, read books. It's really a wide, wide ... portrait of the community. It's all different kinds of people really. But it gives people vibrancy, friendship, and community. It's a local outreach. It's many many different things to many people.

J: The atmosphere is so important. It's just a great place to hang out. Jason explains that he's only worked here two months after leaving a high-stress consulting job. Let's hear about the reason why he chose to work at a cafe over a high paying, high stress job.

实录3: Jason: You know, I've actually only worked here about two and a half months. And for about 15 years I worked in a very high stress consulting environment. And decided to make a change to specifically come into a cafe atmosphere. You know, while I don't make as much money as I once did, my quality of life and happiness level have certainly increased exponentially.

J: "Regulars" are people who come everyday or sometimes many times a day. Again, here's Jason.
实录4: Jason: Oh, ab...absolutely! One of the joys of working here is getting to know people. And we have people that come in daily and sometimes multiple times a day. So, it's very fun. It's more than a place to come and get a drink and a muffin. It really is community-oriented in many ways and...and person-oriented. It's more personable than a normal commerce situation.

实录5: Jason: I think it's very important because there's something about a hot cup of coffee, or even a cold one, but especially a hot coffee or hot tea that ... that brings people to just slow down maybe for a few minutes during the day and sit down without guilt and be able to just relax and read the paper or talk to a friend or even a stranger.
Y: 到一个咖啡馆有一种让人轻松的气氛就是Jason刚才谈一谈到- "slow you down." 那到咖啡馆坐一会儿喝一杯自己喜欢的咖啡是一件很惬意的事。
J: Cafes are just a great place to start your day, to come in the middle of your day or to end your day. You can hang out with friends, relax, read a book ... they're just great places.

「美国习惯用语」第2讲

下面我们要讲两个和吃东西有关的俗语。第一个是: “Greasy spoon.”Greasy是油腻的意思, spoon是指调羹,也就是汤勺。Greasy和spoon这两个字合在一起就是指那些有点像夫妻老婆店那样的小饭馆。这些小饭馆一般来说菜谱上花色品种并不多,碗筷也好像不那么干净,装潢也不讲究,但是菜的味道倒不错,价钱也很公道。
下面我们来举个例子。这是一个丈夫在对他的的妻子讲话:
例句-1: Honey, let me take you out to dinner. But you know I don’t feel like dressing up to go some place fancy. How about just going down the street to the greasy spoon and getting hamburgers?”
丈夫说:“亲爱的,让我带你去外面吃晚饭吧。不过,我实在不想穿得必恭必敬的去那些大饭馆。咱们就上街那头那个小饭馆去吃汉堡包怎么样?”
下面我们再举一个例子,这是一个人在和朋友说话:
例句-2: Mike, you ought to try the potstickers at that little Chinese joint on New York Avenue. It looks like a greasy spoon but the potstickers are great and the price is cheap.
他说:“麦克,你得上纽约大街那个中国小饭馆去尝尝他们的锅贴。那饭馆看起来不像样,可是他们的锅贴味道真好,价钱又便宜。”

下面再讲第二个和吃东西有关的习惯用语: Potluck. Pot的意思是锅子, luck是运气。可是,我们现在讲的 potluck 是一个字。 Potluck 作为一个字,它指的是美国一种经常举行的聚会形式。也就是在某一个人,或几个人的提议下举行一个午餐会或晚餐会,但是参加聚会的每个人都要带一个菜或者带一种饭后甜食。主人除了为聚会提供场地外,也只要准备一个菜 ,或买一些饮料就行了。这就叫作: Potluck lunch or potluck supper.可以想象,举行Potluck的时候,大家能够尝到许多不同的食品。可是,要是你运气不好, 好几个人带的东西你都不爱吃的话,那你就只好回家去那个greasy spoon吃点儿什么了。Potluck还有另外一个意思。那就是:有什么就要什么。用在吃的方面就成了: 有什么吃什么的意思。比如,一个人碰到了好几年没见面的老朋友,他说:
例句-3: Say, Charley, if you don't have plans for tonight, why don’t you come out to our house and have a potluck with us? Helen won’t have time to cook anything special, but she can put an extra plate on the table for you.
他说：“喂，查理，你要是晚上没事就上我家来吃便饭。有什么吃什么。我太太不一定有什么时间做什么菜，但是多加一份筷子是绝对没有问题的。”
上面我们讲了美国习惯用语的一些特点以及两个和吃东西有关的习惯用语。一个是:Greasy Spoon是指价廉物美的小饭馆。今天讲的另外一个词汇是:Potluck 是每个人都带一样菜的一种聚会。现在你就懂得下面这句话的意思了:
例句-4: I’ve been so busy lately. Last week I went to a greasy spoon with a friend and this Sunday I’ve got to go a potluck.
这句话的意思是:“我最近可忙了。上个周末我和一个朋友去一家小饭馆吃饭,这个星期天我得做一个菜去参加一个聚会。”

Lesson Two 第二课
今天李华和Michael在对话里使用的两个常用语，一个是：to ditch，另一个是：to hit the spot。现在Michael 正在图书馆里做功课，李华来找他。
L: 嗨，Michael，功课做得怎么样了？
M: I can't think. It's too noisy. Let's ditch this place.
L: 你没法动脑筋，因为这儿太闹。你还说什么来啦？Ditch this place，什么意思呀？
M: Ditch! To ditch means to quickly leave a place you no longer want to be.
L: 噢，to ditch 就是你不想再呆在那个地方，想赶快离开。你的意思就是要马上离开图书馆。不对啊，ditch 这个字不是可以解释为地上挖的沟吗？你说的 ditch 是同一个字？
M: Yes, it is. Same word, same spelling, but a different meaning.
L: 原来是同一个字，同样拼法，但意思不同。噢, Michael, 再举个例子给我听，好吗？
M: If we want to get away from someone you could say, "Let's ditch him," which means to leave someone behind.
L: 你的意思是 to ditch 不仅可以指地方，还能指人。上次我们跟 Mary 一起去看电影，看完电影我们俩没跟 Mary 打招呼就走了，这就可以说：We ditched Mary，对不对？
M: That's correct.
L: 要是你干活干腻了，不想干了，那该说。。。
M: To ditch work.
L: 不想去开会。。。
M: To ditch the meeting. You can also say: to ditch the concert.
L: 我知道，那是不想去音乐会。要是和朋友约好了，可是又不想去了，那该怎么说呀？
M: To ditch my friend. Hey, can we ditch the library now! I am really tired and could use some coffee.
L: Ok, ok。让我们离开这图书馆吧。你累了，想喝咖啡。走，去校园外的那个咖啡馆吧。
L: 好，咖啡馆到了。
M: Yep, here's the coffee shop. Li Hua, what do you want, my treat this time.
L: 你请我啊？那太好了。我要一杯咖啡就行了。
M: Sounds good. Two coffees please. Here's your coffee, Li Hua.
L: Thanks!

It goes in one ear and out the other.
to play by ear
今天我们要讲两个和耳朵，也就是ear有关的成语。中国人经常说那些不听劝告的人对别人的话总是“一个耳朵进一个耳朵出”，把它们当作“耳边风”。美国也有完全相同的说法。他们是这样说的： "It goes in one ear and out the other."
下面是一个父亲在说他的女儿：
例句-1："I told Sally it was foolish to marry that man, but it went in one ear and out the other. Now she wishes she'd listened to me. He drinks and gambles and she wants to leave him."
这位爸爸说：“我早就告诉沙利不要那么笨,去和那个人结婚。可是,对于我的话，她是一个耳朵进一个耳朵出。结了婚她才知道那人又喝酒又赌钱。现在她后悔当初没听我的话，想要和他分手啦。”
下面这个例子是一个老板在对他的秘书说话：
例句-2："How many times have I told you to get to work on time. But my words just go in one ear and out the other. So I don't have any choice but to fire you."
他说：“我告诉了你多少次上班要准时。可是，你对我的话老是一个耳朵进一个耳朵出。现在，我没有办法了，只好解雇你了。”
下面我们要讲的一个习惯用语是：play by ear. Play就是玩的意思。可是，play by ear的意思并不是“玩耳朵”。这个词汇的来源和音乐有关系。它原来指的是那些会弹钢琴或某种乐器，但是却不会看五线谱的人。每当他们要弹奏某个曲调时，他们只能凭着上一回听到的记忆来弹。可是pla y by ear现在已经成为日常用语了，意思是做一件事不是事先有计划的，而是走着瞧，临时决定。例如，你被请到某处去讲话，可是又没有时间准备。你就可以对听众说：
例句-3："I haven't had a chance to prepare any notes so all I can do is start talking and play it by ear."
这话的意思是：“我今天没有什么准备，所以就只好讲到那儿就算那儿了。”
下面一个例子是一个人在和朋友约会：
例句-4:"I am not sure if my wife wants me to go shopping with her on Sunday. If she decides to go with her sister instead, then I can play tennis with you. Let's just play it by ear."
他说：“我还不知道星期天我太太是否要我陪她去买东西。要是她决定和她姐姐一起出去，那我就能和你去打网球。我们就瞧着办吧!”

Michael是纽约大学的美国学生，他同时也在一家建筑公司实习。他的中国同学李华今天要去他的公司看他。Michael听得懂中文，但是说还有点困难。Michael和李华在今天的对话里会用两个常用语，一个是：big gun; 另一个是to quarterback。Michael现在在办公室门口和李华打招呼。
M: Hey, Li Hua, Come on in. How're you doing?
L: 我挺好。你怎么样？对了,你下午想干什么？
M: Ah, I've got a meeting with the big guns this afternoon. They want to talk to me about continuing to work here after graduation.
L: 我听懂了你后面的一句话，他们要跟你谈关于毕业后回来工作的事。那真是太好了。可是，你刚才说今天下午要跟谁开会？
M: Yea, I 'm meeting with my bosses. Sometimes we call them the big guns of the office.
L: 噢，你要跟你的几个老板开会。你们把老板叫做the big guns!
M: It's an expression that can be used to describe powerful people.
L：噢，那是指权力很大的人，也就是大人物。那么，总统的顾问能称为big guns吗？
M: Yes, a president's advisors are big guns. But it can also be used in sports. In soccer the stars of a team are the big guns.
L: Big guns 还能用在体育方面。
M: OK, let me show you around the rest if the office.

M: This is the conference room. We had a meeting here yesterday on our plan for a new building. The project leader quarterbacked the meeting.

M: No, no, no! Quarterback here is a verb, meaning to lead. The word quarterback is borrowed from American football, where the quarterback leads the team.

Michael 和李华在对话中用了两个常用语，一个是：the big guns，意思是大人物，对决策有重大影响的人；另一个是：to quarterback，意思是主持会议，或总管项目。这次[流行美语]就播讲到这里。下次节目再见。

M: No problem. Oh, so hot! Be careful. Good coffee, really hits the spot. I feel more awake now.
L: 对，咖啡是不错，你已经觉得清醒点儿啦！我可不信咖啡的作用就那么快！对了，刚才你说: " It really hits the spot? To hit the spot 不是击中要害吗？你刚才说的好象不是这个意思。你怎么老是说一些怪里怪气的话。
M: Hit the spot means to satisfy one's need. I really needed some coffee earlier so it really hit the spot.
L: 原来hit the spot 就是满足一个人的需要。你刚才很想喝咖啡，喝了就感到非常过隐，很痛快。Hit the spot 是哪三个字组成的？
M: Hit-the-spot. For example, if you are hungry and go eat you could say, "That food really hit the spot."
L: 中文里也有这个说法。肚子非常饿的时候去吃饭。吃饱了就感到心满意足。洗个热水澡真痛快，那该怎么说？
M: A hot bath would hit the spot.
L: 吃个汉堡包真过隐，该怎么说？
M: A burger would hit the spot. Let's go, I'm hungry.
L: 好家伙，喝了咖啡，又肚子饿了，要去吃汉堡包。这回我可不奉陪了， I have to ditch you now. 再见了！
M: Ok. Bye. 再见。

「美国习惯用语」第四讲

doggy bag
sunny side up
over easy
在这一课里，我们要讲几个和吃东西有关的词汇。第一个是: doggy bag。
Doggy这是字是dog,也就是“狗”这个字的形容词。Bag大家都知道是“口袋”的意思。Doggy bag连在一起是指饭馆里把客人吃剩的菜放在盒子里，然后把它们都放在一个纸口袋里让客人带回家的那种口袋。那末，这和狗又有什么关系呢? Doggy bag这个说法的出现有它特殊的背景。以前美国人也不好意思把在饭馆吃剩的菜带回家，怕有失面子。所以有的人就会对服务员说：
例句-1："Waiter, could you please wrap up the rest of this steak for me ? I'd like to take it home for my dog."
这个人对服务员说：“请你把这块牛排包起来，我想带回家给我的狗吃。”
尽管带回家的东西是给人吃的，但是doggy bag这个名称也就成了日常用语了。现在，情况就不同了。在美国，把在饭馆里吃剩的东西带回家已经是习以为常的事了。饭馆还都备有这些让客人装剩菜的盒子。也没有人会因为要把剩菜带回家而感到不好意思。在美国首都华盛顿，许多中国饭馆的服务员往往不等客人说话就把剩菜给装在doggy bag里了。下面我们来举个例子:
例句-2："We had so much food left over from dinner at the China garden last night that we took enough home in doggy bags to feed the whole family tonight."
她说：“昨晚我们在汉宫吃饭剩下了好多菜。我们带回家的剩菜就足够我们全家今天晚上再吃一顿的。”

尽管美国人现在对身体里的胆固醇是否太高很敏感，但是他们到饭馆吃早饭时还是经常要点荷包蛋。可是，荷包蛋的做法各有不同。有的要蛋黄老一点，有的要嫩一点。有的只要煎一面，有的要两面都煎一煎。在英语里，这些都有不同的说法。要是你喜欢吃只煎一面的荷包蛋，那你就应该对服务员说：你要你的鸡蛋： Sunny side up.
Sunny side的意思是太阳的那一面，sunny side up也就是蛋黄向上的意思。要是放在整个句子里的话就是：
例句-3："I would like to have my eggs sunny side up."
要是你愿意要荷包蛋两面都煎一下的，那你就说你要：Over easy.
也就是把鸡蛋反过来也煎一下的意思。比如说，有两个人在饭馆里吃早饭，各人要的荷包蛋不一样：
例句-4：M: "Miss, I'd like two fried eggs sunny side up and the sausage on the side."
F: "Not me. I don't like to see my eggs staring up at me with big yellow eyes. Miss, two fried eggs, over easy and not fried too hard."
那位先生说：“小姐，我要两个荷包蛋，只要煎一面。另外再加一点香肠。”
而那位女顾客说：“我可不要，我不喜欢两个大蛋黄像眼睛那样瞪着我。小姐，我要鸡蛋两面都煎一下，但不要太老。”

今天我们一共讲了三个有关吃东西的习惯用语:
第一个是doggy bag。 doggy bag是指人们把在饭馆里吃剩下来的饭菜装在里面带回家的口袋。第二个是sunny side up。Sunny side up是要荷包蛋只煎一面。今天讲的第三个习惯用语over easy。Over easy的意思是荷包蛋两面都煎一下。

「美国习惯用语」第五讲

in hot water
to throw cold water on something
英语里有好些习惯用语都和“水”，就是water这个字有关系。有的用：hot water；还有的用：cold water or deep water。在英语里用这些词汇组成的习惯用语就和水一样普遍。但是，它们都有一个共同的特点，那就是它们一般都含有贬意。今天我们要向大家介绍两个用water这个字组成的习惯用语。第一个是：in hot water. In hot water的意思并不是“在热水中”。它的确切意思是指某人或某些人出境困难,遇到非常麻烦的问题了。举个例子来说吧：
例句-1："Joe is really in hot water now -- his girlfriend just found out he's seeing another woman."
这句话的意思是：“乔伊现在可是难办了，因为他的女朋友最近发现他另外还有一个女朋友。”
我们再举一个例子：
例句-2："That movie actor tried to cheat on his income tax, but he got caught and now he's in hot water with the government."
这是说：“那个电影演员想在缴纳所得税的时候弄虚作假，可是给税务局发现了。现在，他可麻烦了。”
今天要讲的另一个和water有关的习惯用语是： to throw cold water on something. To throw cold water on something和中文里说的“泼冷水”意思完全一样。下面的例子是一个人在说他办公室里发生的事：
例句-3："Everybody else in the office thought my idea was great, but the boss threw cold water on it."
他说：“办公室里所有的人都认为我的主意很好，就是我们的老板给我泼冷水。”我们再举一个例子。这是一个儿子在说他的爸爸：
例句-4："I had planned on going to medical school but my dad threw cold water on this idea the other day when he told me he wasn't sure he had the money to pay my tuition for so long."
他说：“我一直想上医学院。可是，那天我爸爸给我泼冷水，说他不一定有能力替我付那么多年的学费。”

J: Today I thought we would introduce Margaret Peng, the Chinese-American woman we met who does something quite uncommon. She's a drummer in a Scottish pipe band. Yang Chen, how cool is that!?
Y: 你说得没错，我对她的印象特别的深. 这个女孩儿叫Margaret Peng, 是一位华裔，是华盛顿苏格兰风笛乐队的队员之一。在这种乐队里华人并不多见。那么，作为一个华裔，她是怎么迷上这种音乐的呢？我们来看看她是怎么说的：
实录1: Margaret Peng: I'm a tenor drummer in the pipe band and I started playing in high school. Eh... I had a friend who was in the bagpipe band in high school. That what she played. She said: "Come on join it with me, join it." So I did it and I didn't think I'd keep doing it but I am (laughs).
J: How many years now?
MP: I've been in this band I've been in for 12, 12 years. Right.
Y: Margaret刚才说她是在高中就加入了乐队一直到现在她练了十二年了，很长时间。
J: 12 years! Wow.
Y: 真的很不简单。她加入乐队的原因其实很简单。她当时她有一个朋友在乐队里吹bagpipe 的, 就问她, 你参加不参加? 她说好啊，就是那么简单.
J: That's simple. She was in high school and a friend told her to come join the band.
Y: 没错，没错。她在乐队里是鼓手。
J: Yang Chen, I was so impressed when we saw Margaret Peng twirling her mallets in the air! It's like she was dancing! Really beautiful. She explained to me that the mallets are actually the sticks you use to bang the drum.
Y: 对，“mallet”就是敲鼓用的鼓槌，或者小音槌。当时如果你能看到Margaret Peng挥舞小音槌的姿势，你会觉得她非常优美，简直就象跳舞一样。
J: The music of the Scottish pipe band is so bizarre, isn't it?
Y: Bizarre?
J: You know, 奇怪。

Y: "Bizarre"当然有奇怪的意思，不过这里说奇特更合适一些，因为这个音乐还是很好听的。
J: I don't think anything sounds quite like the music of Scotland. And especially the bagpipes. While the drums are familiar, Yang Chen, to many cultures, I don't think the bagpipes are.
实录2: Margaret Peng: It takes a lot of time. It's very difficult. There's a bag that you inflate with a blowpipe in your mouth. And you inflate the bag and every time you blow then you squeeze after you finish blowing. And you have to keep the pressure constant to keep that drone sounds. And then you have to play and then you have to walk. So there's a lot of things going on at the same time.
Y: 说起来这种乐器的名字里面有个“笛”，风笛。其实它比中国笛子或长笛相比要大得多，看上去也很重。
J: They have to carry all their instruments as they are marching.
Y: Margaret刚才提到吹奏风笛有一种“drone sound”。我想要让听众更好地了解这种声音，还是让他们听一段音乐。
J: Of course that's the best way. Let's play a droning bagpipe.
Enter bagpipe music.
J: I mean, picture this, Yang Chen. A group of musicians, men and women, dressed in the same very formal Scottish costume with kilt, you know a skirt, and carrying their instruments as they parade around.
Y: 大家可以想象一下，一群人带着自豪感，昂首阔步地前进。我还记得Margaret当时给我的印象很深，她很威风，对不起？
J: Exactly.
