1. A strong earthquake struck Wenchuan on May 12.
一次强烈地震在5月12日襲擊汶川.
地震這個單字 earthquake 經過此次大地震, 沒聽過這個字的人可能沒幾個. 它也可以簡寫成 quake. 另外, 襲擊的動詞用的是 strike, 由於是過去發生的事, 所以必須用它的過去式 struck. 另外一個可以當作襲擊的是 hit 這個單字
2. The earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale shook Wenchuan, causing severe damage to infrastructure in several cities.
這個芮氏規模 7.8 的地震不但震撼了汶川, 還在許多城市對基礎建設造成嚴重的破壞.
表示地震強度的方法有二種, 第一種是以其釋放出的總能量來計算, 就是所謂的規模 (magitude) 最常用的就是芮式規模 (Richter scale). 另外一種是強度(intensity), 是以各地實際上搖晃的強度而定,
3. The epicenter of the quake was situated at Wenchuan in Sichuan.
這次的震央位於四川汶川
震央的英文就是 epicenter. 另外如上所提, quake 也可以用來表示地震的意思.
4. It cut off the power and the water supply in broad areas.
在很廣泛的地區內, 它切繼了電源和水的供應
一般想到電這個單字很容易就聯想到 electricity, 但在英文中一般家中所用的"電" 稱之為 power. 至於停電, 英文中可簡單地說, The power is gone.
5. More than 50, 000 are killed and many injured in this disaster.
有超過五万人在這次的災難中死亡, 另外還有很多人受傷.
講到在什麼樣的意外災害中死亡, be killed 是最常用的字眼了, 例如 Two people are killed in the car accident. 如果要用 dead 這個字眼, 則可以寫成 The quake has left 50，000 dead, 或是 More than 50，000 died in the quake.
6. There are still hundreds of people buried alive under the rubble.
還有好幾百人在瓦礫堆下被活埋.
Buried alive 中文翻成活埋, 實在是我所能想到最悲慘的事了, 一棟大樓倒塌就造成了七八十人活生生被埋在瓦礫堆中. 而 rubble 指的是瓦礫, 和另一個字殘骸 (debris) 時常一起出現在地震的相關報導中. 如果要說他被困在瓦礫堆中, 則是 He is trapped under the rubble.

7. The rescue team combed through the rubble to save surviors.
搜救隊在瓦礫堆中搜尋生還者.
Comb through 指的有點像是中文裏所說的, "地毯式的搜查", 大概這跟 comb 的原意: "梳子"脫離不了關係. 記得上次小甘迺迪墜機時, 新聞報導用的也是這個字, They combed through the sea ground.. 此外, 我們要說搜救隊爭取時間救人, 可以說 They race agaist the clock to find survivors, 或是 They battle clock to find survivors.
8. Surprisingly, the walls of the collapsed building were filled with empty plastic bottles and metal buckets instead of bricks.
很令人驚訝地是, 倒塌的建築物的牆壁居然不是磚塊做的, 而是由空的塑膠筒和金屬筒所砌成的.
9. Powerful aftershocks still continue shacking Wenchuan after May 12 .
強烈的餘震在5月12日後仍舊持續震撼著汶川
餘震的英文就是 aftershock.
10. I hope everyone can pray for the hapless victims in the diaster.
我希望每一個人都能為不幸的受害者祈禱.
這次大震死傷如此慘重,我們除了捐獻一點金錢外, 我們所能作的也就是為這些不幸的受害者祈禱了, 當然我們最希望的也就是能有更多的生還者奇蹟式地被發現. hapless victims 是固定用法, 就是指不幸的受害者.
地震規模的計算公式為 logE=11.8+1.5ML (E為能量,ML為芮氏規模), 所以ML每增加1.0 ,能量差約 10^1.5=30倍, 地震史迄今最大規模8.9, 相當於此次集集大震的 40 倍.
而地震震度則是衡量地表人類感受震動的激烈程度, 其為整數,共分0~6級,亦可由加速度來衡量, 計算公式為其與地震震度的關係為 logA=0.5I-0.6(A為加速度, I為震度) 6級為加速度250gal以上, 1gal= 1cm^2/sec, 而 1g=980 gal. 所以六級的強震就相當於 0.25g. 據聞此次大次震最大震度超過 900 gal 也就是大約在 1g 左右, 遠遠超過六級強震的標準.
謹在此悼念 512 大地震不幸死難的同胞.
