Planning,designing and building a successful Olympic Games

For a few weeks every four years,the world focus on Summer Olympics.But its attendtion is also focus on the city h_____(主办,做...的主持人) the games.Few other activities draw as much positive attendtion to a city as holding the Olympics.

The games bring a lot of people to a host city.Beijing is expecting almost 3 million athletes,coaches and other visitors for the 2008 Games.Most importantly,the Olympics attrack reporters that cover the games for people around the world.More than 3.9 b____(10亿) people tuned into watch the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Taking care of so many people can be a big c_____(挑战) . Visitors need to be housed ,fed and transported around the host city.This requires a lot planning and c____ (建设) .Host cities must build news centres,athletes' villiages,hotels and restraunts.They must also expand their roads and public transportation systems.Hosting the Olympics means huge challenges-and huge expenses-for a city.

Since the world is watching,cities want to create an exciting environment for "their" Olympic Games.The 2008 games will use a total of 37f_____(供特殊用途的:场所或设施) .Twelve of them are being built especially for the Olympics.

Central among the new venues is Beijing's National S_____(运动场) . The staduim uses a creative design that makes it look like a bird's nest.The "bird's nest" can seat 91,000 people.At the Olympics,it will be the site of track-and-filed events.it will also be uesd for the opening and closing ceremonies of the games.

The venue that will house the swimming and diving events is another important facility.Located near the National Stadium,it looks like a giant c_____ (立方体) of water.The building walls are covered with c_____(垫状物;靠垫) filled with air. The building ues LED lights to make the walls look like water.The centre will host most of the water sports during Olympics.

A successful Olympics is about more than producing an exciting competition.It's also about building a better city for the people who live there. <
