Andrea: He’s written over 50 best-selling horror novels, such as ‘Carrie’,
‘The Shining’ and ‘Dreamcatcher’.
Jean: 他的小说还被拍成了很多电影，像《肖申科的救赎》，还有《绿里奇迹》。
Andrea: Yes, today on BBC Learning English we’re going to meet well-known
American writer, Stephen King. Hello I’m Andrea Rose.
Jean: 大家好，我是董征。
Andrea: Stephen King is best known for his horror and fantasy novels.
Jean: 史蒂芬·金写的小说体裁 genre 大多是恐怖小说和幻想小说。
Andrea: As a child he apparently witnessed a terrible accident. One of his
friends was hit and killed by a train.
Jean: 在如此年轻的年纪自己的好朋友就被火车撞死了，这确实是件很可怕的事情。
Andrea: I know, but many people believe that it’s because of this that
Stephen started writing his horror novels.
Jean: 我想这样的事情可能会影响到他的写作。不过他也撰写过纯故事性的小说，像
《肖申科的救赎》，就是一个与他恐怖小说风格迥异，富有人情味的精彩故
事。
Andrea: So, does Stephen believe that writers can switch between different
styles when they write?
Insert
I don’t necessarily and I don’t think that it’s a given that you can write many
different things. I think that you're drawn in certain directions. You know, in some
ways I’m in a really good position because I’ve seen an arc of critical approval for
my work build over the years; which is a lot better, believe me, than starting out
with a big bank of critical approval and then frittering it away.
Andrea: Stephen says that it’s not a given that you can write lots of things.
Jean: A given 的意思就是不言而喻，不用说就是了。 Stephen他说，并不是所有
的作家都能够在不同风格中切换。他认为所有的作家都是有着一个主要的创作
方向的，总在某种小说的创作方面比其它种小说要擅长。
Andrea: In Stephen’s case, he was drawn to writing horror stories. Maybe
because of what happened to him as a child.
Jean: 所以他在恐怖小说的创作上是非常的成功。迄今为止， Stephen King 已经夺
得过23 项重大文学奖，小说的全球销量也达到了数百万。
Andrea: And he’s very proud of all the good reviews he’s had. A review is
when an expert reads your work and writes what they think about
it.
Jean: 书评 a review, 也有一点像影评。
Andrea: Exactly. In Stephen’s case, he’s enjoyed great acclaim.
Jean: Acclaim. 赞扬和推崇。
Andrea: So, how did he become so famous as a horror writer?

That label has been put on me and I never put it on myself. More importantly in
my head, I never said it's time to write another horror novel. I would just say I
have an idea it’s time to write a book. I’ve been able to tell stories from tales of
outright horror like ‘Pet Cemetery’, to stories like ‘The Shawshank Redemption’
and a lot of times people don’t believe that I had anything to do with writing that;
so I wear different hats.
Jean: Stephen 他说他并没有选择去做一个恐怖小说作家。他没有选择那个品牌
label.
Andrea If you’re labelled, people see you in a certain way. But Stephen is
proud that he is much more than just a horror writer.
Jean: 不过我不得不说，我以前不知道是他写的《肖申克的救赎》。
Andrea: Well, as Stephen says, he likes to wear different hats.
Jean: Different hats? Like berets, top hats, caps…
Andrea: No Jean. When Stephen uses the expression ‘different hats’, he
means he likes to show different sides to himself.
Jean: 啊我知道了， to wear different hats 就是说，并不是他选择佩戴不同的帽
子，而是他选择不同的层面，不同的角色。
是的，就在去年，他推出了他的又一本新作，叫做Blaze《火焰》的小说。
Andrea，你看过这本小说了吗？
Andrea: I haven’t and I have to say I haven’t read any of his novels. But I
have seen quite a lot of his books that have been made into films –
‘The Shining’, ‘The Green Mile’ and ‘Carrie’. How about you Jean?
Do you like his writing?
Jean: Yes I do Andrea. 看 Stephen King 的小说就像是进入到一个完全不同的世
界里，读起来很过瘾！
Andrea: Well, we recommend you get reading… and if you don’t get a
chance, the films are just as good!
Jean: 说得差不多了，我想咱们也该和大家说再见了。如果你现在正在看斯蒂芬·金
